Careers around horses: groom, farrier and stable manager

Horses need skilled people around them every day. Many of these jobs are open to people who learn by doing, which makes them a real route to work for young people from families with few options. Here are three of the roles we train for.

Groom

A groom looks after a horse’s daily needs: feeding, grooming, handling, keeping the stable clean, and noticing when something is wrong. It is the foundation of every other stable job, and it teaches patience, routine and responsibility.

Farrier

A farrier cares for horses’ hooves and fits shoes. It is skilled, physical work that needs proper training and practice, and good farriers are valued in every part of the horse world.

Stable manager

A stable manager plans feed and care, looks after safety, keeps records and organises people and tasks so that the whole stable runs well. It builds on experience as a groom.

How we help

Our Skills and Careers programme supports people from economically backward families to learn these skills at our own stable and grounds. We are working towards partnerships with skill development bodies so that training leads to recognised qualifications, and we will name each partner only once an agreement is signed.
